Radical Muslims?

Ok, so not everyone in Afghanistan is a Muslim. But, everyone in Afghanistan should have the right to skateboard. On that note, check out this story from the NY times about an individual named Oliver Percovich, a guy in the process of opening up a skateboarding school in the city of Kabul. From the article:

"Among those who look forward to his visits is Maro, an elfin 9-year-old girl who was terrified of skateboarding at first. “It gives me courage, and once I start skating, I completely forget about my fears,” she said."

It's not a new story, but worth the read if you don't already know about it. Thanks to everyone I know for sending me a link to this.

Skate 2 - Out Now!

One thing I love about EA's Skate 2 is how you can recreate your own style of skateboarding in a realistic way, easily. For example, I've recreated myself skating that ditch by Kona, in this video you can see here. Rad, huh?

Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory

If you don't know already Rob Dyrdek has been working on a new show. I dunno about you guys, but I love watching Rob and Big. It's my Real Housewives. But that's done with, so I'm just gonna have to look forward to this:

More Skate Coverage from Artwalk

Way down in the basement of the Hayden Burns Library Downtown, magical things happen. This past Wednesday, those magical things included a whole lotta skateboarding. In addition to a blank deck art show, a showing of the film 'Veer', and some breakdancing dudes, there was a Red Bull street course and a demo going on, on that smooth as silk basement floor. Notable heads seen skating include Mike Peterson, Chris Kendall, George Evans, Matt Fink, and a slew of others. The course was actually pretty interesting, consisting of various objects with faux-brick surfaces, including a quarter pipe/launch ramp to wall, a grind box, and this angled bar with banks on it. What the hell do you call those things? I saw Fink haul ass and ollie into the bank on that thing. Anyway, Thanks to everyone who came out to show support, the response was overwhelming-just as it should have been.

Artwalk - Is there an Afterparty?

So as mentioned before, rumor has it that there will be some skateboarding events going down at the old library during the Artwalk tomorrow night. What's more, a little bird told me that there might just be a skateboarding themed afterparty going down at Club TSI after the Artwalk is done. Is it true? Do you want to be invited? Do you like miniramps? (what?) Send me an email with the subject 'TSI Artwalk Skate Afterparty" in the subject line, and we'll see what we can do.

Update: This might be what that rumored ramp might look like, if Mike Stokes were skating it, popping out of a blunt...

Artwalk Skate Happenings, January 7th, 2009

The Hayden Burns Library has been known to house some pretty happenin' things since being built, and this coming wednesday is no exception. Though the library books have gone, arts and the creative spirit still thrive. For this month's Artwalk, there is plenty of stuff going on. This is the artwalk for skateboarders.

From Patrick Barry at Blue Llama Studios:

Little bit late notice, but if you're at ArtWalk tomorrow evening, come by the old Hayden Burns Libray (122 N. Ocean St). We'll be projecting the new short VEER! on continous rotation from 6 to 9pm. Runs about 10 minutes. We'll either be on the first floor or in the basement, depending on where they stick us. See you out there!

A clip from Veer

In addition to this showing, there is a blank deck art show going on, as mentioned a couple of posts back. I also got wind of a video by Chris Jolley, and a showing by Arturo clothing, a rad clothing company created by people you may very well know. I'll post more details as I get them, please stay tuned!
